Under the USDA’s regulations, “organic” is a labelling term that refers to the way agricultural products, both food and fibre, are grown and processed. Organic products come from a system of agriculture that strives for a balance with nature, using methods and materials of low impact to the environment. Organic foods are minimally processed without artificial ingredients, preservatives or irradiation. Standards and Regulations for Canada
Canada has had a national organic standard since 1999. The standard details the agricultural practices that are acceptable in organic agriculture production systems and lists substances that are prohibited in organic systems. Some 27 certifying bodies across the country maintain standards. Each certifying body works with trained independent inspectors who visit each certified organic farm annually to ensure compliance with the standard.
